Pink only for Girls?

Yesterday, while picking up my package from UPS, an elderly couple tried to interact with Jamie.

They seemed friendly and for once, Jamie was OK to say hello to a total stranger ? Usually he hides, runs away, or cries… Not this time ? Luckily since I still stood in line to pick up my new package ?. But then the strangest thing happened.

The woman looked at me asking: “Is that a boy?”

I smiled and said: “YES ?”

She continued:” Isn’t that a pink car?”

YES ?” I responded, thinking oh boy, what’s next?

They then said:“But that’s a girls color !!!!”

Is it?” I said in disbelief ?

“Well, we had three sons. One of them wouldn’t always play with pink toys and girly stuff, and he grew up to become weird!

My jaw dropped to the floor ? I was unable to respond further. Have you sometimes experienced to be left speechless, where you wished you had said something? Well here is what I wish I had said in that exact moment ?

“Annnndd?!!!

Well let me tell you a story ?

My son had all the choices in the world, when he picked out this car. He was told he could get any car! He could have picked the yellow one, the blue, green or even the red car!!!! But nooo ?

He wanted this little pink, Herbie look alike, car with cute bumper stickers on ? Saying PEACE LOVE spiced up with lots of flowers ?

Before paying for the car, I asked him: “Do you want the Yellow car” while showing it to him. And he looked at me and yelled ? “NOOoooo❗”

Then I pointed to his hand holding the pink car, asking “Do you want this car?” And there it was, the Christmas lights in his eyes ? and his smile grew bigger and bigger ? even the cashiere had to smile and she said “it’s obvious which one he wants ?”

He takes this car everywhere!! To daycare, shopping and even to bed, where I feel the need to take it when he sleeps, so he does not have to sleep on something hard. It is his car! His choice! And he freaking loves this car ? And I love him for that.

BTW who decided that pink was only for girls? Boys are not allowed to play with pink or girly stuff. But girls can play with blue toys? Just saying, why care about some old fashioned women & men rolls?

I embrace his pink car and find it cute. I love him for loving this car soo much ? he even showed it to a girl in kvickly, proudly saying: ” myee caaar!” It makes me happy, to see his excitement ?

This is a sweet little reminder, that kids are innocent and don’t care about our stereotypes! Let them and yourself live & experience life to the fullest

Hugs & Kisses
